The XiScan XR-90 CANBUS Code reader gives home and professional mechanics, an inexpensive, pocket sized, and easy platform for vehicle diagnosis and resetting the check engine light. Did you know something as simple as a loose gas cap can cause your Check Engine Light to come on? However not checking the cause of the trouble light can cause your engine to run rich, dumping unburned fuel into your catalytic convertor. Drive like this and risk, thousands of dollars of damage in emissions control components, as well as the risk of fire!
The XR-90 is fully OBD-II Compliant. This protocol was mandated by the EPA for all cars, light trucks, and SUV’s sold in the US since 1996. This standard eliminated the proprietary systems in place before. In addition the CAN-BUS protocol is also supported, this is the next generation system allowing much more detailed information to be retrieved in real time. Future-proof your investment, and guarantee compatibility with vehicles 2002 and newer.
Unlike other systems, the XR-90 is fully self contained. It pulls its power from your cars diagnostic socket, needs no batteries, software, computer or additional cables. Simply connect the 16 pin universal connector to your cars diagnostic port, press the enter button and in under 29 seconds have a read out of the DTC, which is triggering your check engine light. Correct the problem, press clear and your done! Few other tools pack this level of ease, power and simplicity, into such a small package!
Buying a New (for you) Car? Did you know that codes can be pending that will not trigger the check engine light?
Mechanic want to charge you for expensive sensors or engine electronics – get an unbiased second opinion?

3 Users Response In " XiTech XR-90 Advanced OBD2 Code Reader "
Does The Job Well,
I bought this because my car’s Check Engine light kept coming on. The annoying thing is, I knew what it kept saying the problem was, and the dealer agreed it wasn’t an important issue (a slight incompatibility caused by having a generic replacement part and not a GM certified part). But, with that light constantly on, it would keep me from learning if something more serious ever occurred.
So, I got this for two reasons: a) to verify what code was being thrown by the computer, b) clear out the code if it’s the one I already know about so that my light will turn off. This device works like a champ in these aspects; simple to find out what code is causing the problem, and a couple of button presses later and it’s cleared out and the Check Engine light is off again. It also has a feature for showing you the status of each sensor in the system, so you know whether all the computer’s sensors have run or not since you last cleared it out.
The package advertises as being able to diagnose a problem in under 29 seconds; I didn’t time it, but it’s still very fast, and also just as fast to clear the code if you do so. The manual lays out all the operations of the device and steps to use it in an easy to follow format; coupled with the device’s simple interface, this device is very easy to use.

|Does the bare minimal, but decent,
I also have an Equus Innova 3130 so I have something to compare with. This little code reader has 5 basic functions (checked this on an ’06 Honda Odyssey):
1. DTC menu
2. Erase menu
3. I/M menu
4. VIN menu
5. Rescan menu
On the DTC menu, you can only retrieve a trouble code. It includes the manual with all the code listings and a quick definition of each code.
For the I/M menu, you can scroll through each self test as reported by the car’s ECU and see if the test was run successfully. This is mainly useful to check your car’s status just before you take it in for a smog test to see if your car’s own computer thinks it’s worthy of passing.
For the VIN menu, it’s just what it says; it retrieves the car’s VIN number (if the car supports reporting it).
Didn’t try the Erase or Rescan, but they seem self-explanatory.
You won’t get other features like the Innova 3130 has, but then again, I had to pay over a $160 for the 3130. The 3130 additionally gives me such features as showing and storing live sensor data (and computer software to analyze the data with), readout of the trouble code’s definition on screen (instead of looking it up in a book), freeze frame data, firmware updateability, and I believe transmission codes. I’m not sure about the transmission codes, but I saw 3130 feature list mention it. Actually, from what I have read, any OBD II handheld that can obtain live sensor data is called a code scanner versus those that only get the DTC which are called code readers.
Given what I paid for this handy little code reader ($24), I don’t expect all the bells and whistles, but quite frankly, just knowing the trouble code already is a good start in the troubleshooting process. I docked one star only because the quality and feel of this tool sort of feels like a toy, so I wouldn’t want to drop it.
The main reason I bought this was to keep a cheap code reader in my car (in case of emergency) and leave my expensive scanner at home for the real dirty work.
Otherwise, it does what it claims, so no complaints.
Update 2011-02-16:
I just used the XR-90 to reset a DTC on a mini cooper over the weekend. It worked flawlessly.
I just received my second code reader in the mail. This one is a Maxiscan MS300. I am convinced the MS300 and the XR-90 is the exact same product, just different colors. The menu has the same options and the user manuals look very similar. The only difference is the MS300 came with a CD.

|It works, and it’s inexpensive,
Customer Video Review Length:: 4:31 Mins
This is a very inexpensive way to check and clear codes you would normally have to spend big money for a shop to diagnose. If you have any mechanical ability at all and have a 96 or newer vehicle this is a great addition to your tool box. In my case my 96 corvette threw a check engine light after a cat back and cold air intake install, I was able to hook this up and see that it was an EGR issue… I cleared the code and if it comes back I will start replacing parts.
