a ground wire is probably broken………. take it to a reputable mechanic

Normally when you ground out the sending unit wire it should go to full then unground it goes to empty, means your dash gauge is good. my guess is you have a short where its touching a ground but search for fuel gauge problems useing the make , model, and year to be sure.

it sounds like the flot is stuck in the gas tank. you are going to have to take it to a garge. there they will remove the gas tank and put a new flot in, but you have to make sure that you don’t have that much gas in the tank.

the sending unit in the tank may be stuck on it,,this happen,s sometimes,,otherwise the main wire for the sending unit would have to shorting out against metal,,to make it do this,,try checking the wire,s around the tank area,,and see if there are any that are bare,,or have been damaged,,i hope this help,s.,,,also try tapping the dash lightly,,the hand may just be stuck,,if so this will release it.

well what it sounds like is that the sending unit in the tank is grounded out .
but dont you have some warranty left on the car.
but if you dont then first check any wires coming from the fuel tank look for breaks or cuts ,
in order to get to the sending unit you will have to pull the tank down and you can get to it that way
you may also have to rent you some tools to unhook those fuel lines from the sending unit, you can get them at autozone or oreillys.
you may want to get you a service manual to help you along on some aspects of the repair. hope this helps

It’s either a short or a bad sending unit. Take it in unless you feel up to a challenge.

Actually since these are not simple circuits where you are grounding the signal from the guage the cause is the opposite of what you might expect.
The fuel level sensor sends its signal to the PCM where it is processed. Data is transmitted to all of the vehicles processors on mostly one circuit. Fuel level data is sent from the PCM to the IPC ( instrument panel cluster). The processor ther receives data addresed to it interprets it and in this case moves the needle accordingly on the fuel guage. In your case it is dispaying full all the time because:
1 The float is stuck at its full position–not likely if youve ever been in there to see it.
or
2There is an OPEN in the signal circuit, ground circuit or the sensor itself. —most likely possibility if you have ever seen how the make level sensors now.

The full indication is a default position when the data is out of range. sensors should rande from either 0-90 ohms or on some 0-250,.(I am speaking only to GM vehicles here). An open goes beyond this range and a reealcrappy connection could read 500 let us say. Even on the older vehicle in GM’s line, shorting the signal to ground would show low resistance and indicate low fuel or an empty tank.
