Why do they make concept cars then never produce?

Why do they make concepts they know will sell then never produce them?? The Cadillac 16 was a little out there but if they made it a V12 I think it would definitely have sold. The Buick Riviera concept is also something new and great looking but will probably never be made and if so look NOTHING like the concept. The car companies like to show us futuristic looking cars but give us slight changes i don’t get it….

In my opinion they do it for two reasons. One is to generate interest in the brand. The second is to vaguely portray what some future vehicles might look like, or what features they may include.

getting a car past the concept phase is hard. When the car is in its concept stage they figure everything out, how it will handle on the road, during a crash, how it will hold up, how streamlined it is, etc…. every year hundreds of concepts are made and only a few make the cut. Cars need to be able to pass a certain score in order to be produced. Most concepts also use new materials that havent been tested out yet, but the idea of them is what sounds good. Like government, it sounds great until it happens. There is always corruption, or in car cases, defects. GE is producing new plastics that can absorb impact with pedestrians and can stand up in an accident. But part of it is to get people excited and to show them what things to come. The Toyota FJ-Cruiser was a concept for over 3 years before it was released.

Because the average car manufacturer don’t want to risk it. Like the public, may like it or not, so they play it safe. And may cost to much for the average American to buy it. So that’s why they do that, and second, they have to be in demand to produce it, like the 2006 Ford Musting.

dont know. it sucks cuz most have millions in research and R and D and you never see any of the ideas come to life. All I can say is that so when you go to a car show the mfgs try to out do the other mfgs thats how they get press time.

First of all, your statement “they know will sell” is far from true. Designing a car that will sell is a crap shoot. That’s really one of the biggest reasons why they build the concept car in the first place — to gauge public opinion and see if there is any support for it. If there is, then they have to sell it to the Corporate Bosses, who are pretty timid.

An exception is Bob Lutz at GM, who green-lighted the Pontiac Solstice.

Other concepts that you can now buy include the Mustang and the Dodge Viper.

There are more coming (Camaro, Challenger), but one of the biggest difficulties is maintaining interest in the buying public while the concept is made into a real car that drives like the concept promised, meets safety standards, and still resembles the beauty you fell in love with.

The Dodge Demon Roadster is a concept that everyone wants them to build, but with Chrysler under new management, there is no one with the political capital to push it through to production. Damn shame, too!

A concept is jus a basic idea of how the Vehicle might look when it will be officially under production but unfortunately most concept never see the light of day and most tht come out dont even look a bit like the orignal concept and I am Expecting the same for the 2008 Supra, 2008 NSX, 2008 Camaro, 2008 Challenger and there are some roumers tht Caddilac will launch a Very similar looking car to the Mighty Caddilac Sixteen but with a smaller engine maybe a V8 or a V12 maybe near 2010 but no way will we ever see 1000 bhp V16 in the current concept, Caddilac announced tht the Caddilac Sixteen is just an Experimental vehicle its just a peek into the future Vehicles of Caddilac, where as the Chrysler ME412 is also hoped to be out by the end of 2009 but there is no word on the Caddilac Cien tht if it’ll ever be produced, the only Concept tht looks almost similar to its full scale Production Model is the 2007 Jaguar XK the only difference is the exhaust pipes.
