Which used motorcycle is better and a better deal? 01 CBR929RR with 27k miles or 02 R6 with 17k miles?

Question by The Engineer: Which used motorcycle is better and a better deal? 01 CBR929RR with 27k miles or 02 R6 with 17k miles?
I am looking at 2 used bikes. 1 is a 2001 Honda CBR929RR with Two Brothers Exhaust, Red & Silver Custom Paint, Clear Tailight, Fender Eliminator Kit, Scott Steering Dampner, Flush Mount Turn Signals, Throttle Lock Cruise Control. Has 27k miles on it and needs new rear tire. asking price is $ 4000
Other is a 2002 Yamaha YZFR6 with a custom exhaust. Has 17k miles on it and asking is $ 3700.
I like the way the R6 looks better but both bikes have been laid down and repaired. The R6 was repaired at home with epoxy glue mostly and repainted so you cant see any of the damage unless you take the plastics off the bike. The CBR as far as i know was repaired properly. Both in great mechanical shape but obviously it has a lot of miles on it. I have plenty of experience to be able to handle both bikes just fine.

I have an 01′ r6 and it has been bullet-proof. I continuosly beat the hell out of it and it starts every time and has never left me stranded. On the other hand the 929 is a sweet bike it has a lot of extras but a few more miles. The mileage isn’t that bad on either bike as long as the maintanace has been kept up. The 929 is a bigger faster bike. It has more power, it’s fuel injected, it has inverted forks, better brakes, and all the aftermarket add-ons. I’ve never ridden a 929, but i’ve sat on one and I thought it had about the same rider position as my old F4i. On my r6 ( 01′ and 02′ are the same) I feel I sit up more. The handling on my r6 great. The steering is very quick with almost no effort. I can’t say for the 929. If I were you I would go with which one you like the most. Myself I have always wanted a 929 but couldn’t afford one so I ride a beat-up r6. The 929 sounds like a good deal. It already has a bunch good of extras (minus the cruise control) that you’ll have to buy if you get the r6.

I personally think Honda makes a better bike. and I don’t think 27K miles is a lot of miles. But I am also a fan of saving money and $ 300 can mean a lot in this economy….. so it comes down to – which one will you pick up more chicks with? Which color do you like better? and which one do you look better on? :) Ride Safe!

I would call the Honda the better deal. If you have cash in hand the seller would probably even drop a couple hundred bucks from the price too.

You get a package of after market stuff on the Honda, just an exhaust for the R6.

Both have been laid down, but the Yama has a home patch job (even if it looks fine, no telling how well it’ll weather).
+0 Honda
-1 Yama

Honda has 10k extra miles (however, 27k is actually not very many miles for the age of the bike, and the after market add-ons lead me to believe this was not an abused bike).

KBB puts the Trade-in/Retail values (respectively) at:
$ 3450/$ 5015 Honda
$ 3175/$ 4620 Yama
Since the Honda has more after market gear and those are for stock and good condition bikes, the Honda has more value.

The 929 has over 50% more cc’s (translating to more power and bragging rights).

From personal experience of working on my friend’s old R6 (I think it was an ’03 or ’01 – he had me fix it so he could trade it in for an ’07), the electronics all seem to have a tendency of going faulty (may have just been his bike…).
+0 Honda
-1 Yama

You prefer the looks of the R6.

Honda is fuel injected, Yamaha uses carbs (this could be considered better or worse to you, but personally I like FI over carbs).
Personal preference, so no points to either.

Total:
Honda: +3
Yamaha: +1

That’s my train of thought for comparing the two…
