What should I look out for when buying an 1994 Audi 80 cabriolet v6?

Question by Sam: What should I look out for when buying an 1994 Audi 80 cabriolet v6?
I’m looking to buy one of these very soon and I was wondering if any one knows of any known isuues or faults on the and is there anything else I need to look out for? I’ve heard the engines are bullet proof but to check for smoke and Ive come across a few 80 copues where the steering woner or pull a bit. I’m looking at a 1994 cab today with 98k and 9 months MOT for £995. Thanks Dan

It’s a fancy, old VW. Germans can overdo their good, precise engineering sometimes. Then they get very expensive to maintain. Keep a good, healthy cash reserve, just in case……..Look up owners clubs and internet forums for known troubles and solutions. Beware of anyone who lavishes uncritical praise. It’s probably lies. All cars have faults, some minor, some murderous-all expensive if you can’t DIY.

Make sure you get a test drive. Check for fluid around the power steering pump, if there is any then it’s new pump time. If it’s an auto and if you hear any noise (e.g. whine) whatsoever from the differential walk away. If the diff goes it takes the auto gearbox with it and that’s expensive. A clue is if the speedo reading is jerky at low speeds. Check the engine code to make sure it’s the model the owner claims. The code is a two letter code (such as DS, KU etc) on a label in the boot lid or in the engine bay. 98K (if it’s a genuine mileage, check for previous MOT certs) is nothing enginewise, they go on for the best part of 200K. I had a 1985 Audi 100 (1.8) manual which lasted for 194K and then I only think it failed the MOT because I slightly overfilled the oil. Make sure the rag top is in good condition, you don’t want to get cold and wet this weather.

At that age unless it has been replaced the roof will leak and not go up and down properly.
basically at 16 years old you need to check everything you can.

You should also consider that such a car may be expensive to insure. Check your insurance rates before buying one, for example here – carinsurance.deep-ice.com

Thats a good solid car. The things to look for are. Control arm bushings and ball joints. You need to buy the arms if they are bad and it can be expensive to replace all of them. Timing belt? Has it been done yet. Tie rod ends and steering rack. Ends no big deal but if the rack is leaking it is about a 11 hour job to replace it. The automatic trans can also be a problem if not maintained. Those are the big ones on that car. Like one of the other answers said check and make sure the top does not leak.

GREAT CAR. I personally prefer the newer V6 with 30 valves, but your 12 valve engine is easier to work on and is far less complex. Open the oil filler cap and look for discoloration deep within engine. ALL AUDI engines require special oil that meets specification 502/505. You are best off with German Castrol or Mobil One. ELF and AMSOIL are great too. Most used audi’s, unfortunately, have been weaned on regular dino based oils. This, in a way, is a good thing. One or two doses of Lubro-Moly crankcase cleaner will return things to like new condition and remove offending trapped in sludge. Then follow up with the newer synthetic oils that meet VW/Audi spec’s. Make sure that ALL fluids are genuine Audi. These engines have piston squirters built in, so they should last for darn near EVER!! This is why they require special oil. Have the suspension checked at a tire shop. Also, be sure that the timing belt has been changed and that the water pump is, too. HEPU water pumps are the best. Use “BLAUFERGNUGEN.com” for best prices on pumps and timing belts and pulleys. Have someone check the PCV system for collapsed hoses, and have your throttle body and IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE cleaned to showroom conditions. Install a set of Denso Iridium plugs for best power and MPG’s GOOD LUCK!!
