Collectible classics can be observed for any number of reasons, but they all boil down to one main factor: the car has a unique quality to it. For example, the Chevy Corvair is a collectible classic because it was an adequate performer for the money and had the unique distinction of having a European feel and a rear engine layout, something new to American shores from an American automaker.
Extreme durability or “pluckiness” can also be factors in becoming a collectible classic. The old (80′s & 90′s) Toyota small 4×4 truck is considered a classic due to its durability and newfound infamy thanks to the Top Gear challenges a few years ago. Likewise, the Mazda RX7 is a collectible classic of sorts due to its unique rotary engine and the fact that it reintroduced classic sports car manerisms to the US. The key here is a unique and sought-after quality to the car.
The Firebird may end up being a classic since it had so many famous associations (Smokey and the Bandit, Knight Rider, etc), Pontiac is now dead, and because it was always remembered as a cheap performance car that offered huge bang for the buck (a la the Camaro).
