What is the difference between snow tires and all season tires?

Question by andrea: What is the difference between snow tires and all season tires?
I am wanting to put new tires on my car for winter snow and ice. I was looking online and there are snow tires but also all season tires. What’s the difference? Are you only supposed to have snow tires during winter? Do you have to change your tires when summer comes? Thanks!

Snow tires have an aggressive tread pattern to grip the snow and slush. Winter tires are kind of different than snow tires. The rubber compound is made to grip ice better than all season or summer tires. It is a softer rubber and it conforms better to the icy road surface.
All season tires are designed to take you through all kinds of weather, but they are a compromise. They do nothing exceptionally well.
Buy winter tires and only use them until winter is gone. Here is a link that can explain it better.http://www.tirerack.com/winter/tech/techpage.jsp?techid=120

Snow tires are designed with traction in winter as the main factor. Therefore the tread pattern is deeper and grips the snow better than an all-weather tire. All-weather tires are just that, tires designed with a multitude of driving conditions in mind. I think that a good all-weather tire would be your best bet if you are driving a front-wheel drive car. Otherwise I would use snow tires on a rear-wheel drive car.

more agressive tread on snow tires than on all season tires and you should take the snow tires off in the summer where with the all season tire you leave them on all year, you should be able to do fine with the all season tire.
