It depends on the individual location. Meet the mechanics, then decide.
IMHO, it is better to find an independent mechanic. ask around for recommendations from family and friends.
check the place out and develop a relationship with the shop
Might look for a local gas station garage whom has been there for quite awhile. These usually have customers whom will not go to anyone else to have their service done. These people generally treat you like a good friend and will let you know what should be done now and what you may need in the future, say they do the tire rotation and balance for you and notice that your brakes are getting thin but not at the point that you have to change them today, they will say that maybe next time you come in for your next service that you might want to think about getting the brakes done at the same time. In my experience most shops like Meineke, Jiffy Lube, don’t really car about the customer and will try to push for unnecessary work to line their pocket books.
I agree with Frank for I am an independent mechanic.
Local mechanics can “get to know your car”, unlike the chain shops that have workers coming and going all the time.
However, if you can find a reliable car care center like a local Meineke or Jiffy Lube, then stick with them. In time, they get to know you and you get to know them. As an added bonus, they often have discount coupons on their web sites that can be used for services!
Back in New Jersey, I had to try 4 different Jiffy Lubes before I found one that I liked and trusted (ended up going to them for oil changes for 10 years). When I lived in north-central Pennsylvania, the local Meineke shop had a very good reputation (they serviced my pickup for over 3 years before I moved). If you do go to a brand-name service center, judge them individually (although ALL my experiences with Midas have been poor!).
