What does it take to become a race car driver?

Question by mark m: What does it take to become a race car driver?
I’m not just another kid thats wants to have a turbo honda civic or any of that, but I want to know what the possibilities of me getting the tools, money, and training to professionally race on coarses. I’ll be out of high school in a year and into college for another 4 years. If I save my money through college and find a cheap british sports car could I ever have it modified to race? I’m just a city boy with a suburb house right now. My chances seem pretty slim. I’m dedicated to save my money and support myself because I love cars. Do any people with racing expirience know anything about how many sacrifices I would have to make to live my dream?

If you are going to college for 4 years and saving money your possibilities for success are very good. You have the correct attitude so I see it happening for you if it’s what you want.

Read as much as you can about engines, suspensions and vehicle dynamics. You can also attend some SCCA events while you are still in school to get a better idea of exactly where you may want to start out. Stick with your plan to finish school though, don’t be tempted to get involved in a way that will be detrimental to your education.

good luck.

the talent, the drive to be a racing driver and the money, lots of it .this is a big decision and you should sit down with your family and talk about your future in motor racing. and you increase your chances of death, seeing it can happen anytime and so very fast.you can’t have any distractions in your life, you have to be totally focused on racing and nothing else ,know women ,know nothing and my women comment is noy to be taken in a bad way ,because if any of people reading this , will know exactly what i mean if they have ever raced.support from your family is very important and don’t get a big head if you ever become successful in motor racing, don’t forget where you came from

Bit late to start now dont you think? if you look at all the great race drivers they have been doing karting since they were kids and then they progress up from there.

Get into karting if ur not already, its cheap and fun. If your good enough you will get noticed.

At the end of the day you need to work out if its really what you want to do, or maybe if you should look for another career and simply buy a track car an race in sunday cup style events. Your taking a big gamble if you are this old and have never done motorsport before, especially as your family doesnt come from motorsport (well i assume they dont or you would have asked them this question long ago right?)

Just buy a race car and start racing. It doesn’t happen over night. It takes years of experience. But the only way you’re going to gain that experience is by getting out there.

Here are a few race car sites.

Road cars:

Rally Cars:

Edit** go to the first site tonight and find a race car you would like to race (“Hey that looks cool). Then read up on it.
