Toyota has always had a gem in the Camry. It represents a huge sales success for Toyota and was the best-selling midsize car in the US and the world for some time. The Solara is heavily based on a 2 door Camry and it shares engines and drivetrain as well as some suspension parts. The Solara is part of a family of Camrys that come in a coupé, sedan station wagon and convertible and the last car was made in 2009. It’s a pretty car with a lot to offer and the car will be at home everywhere especially when you consider that soccer moms love them and even celebrities have Solaras too. Here is why.

There are two engines. A 4 cylinder and a V6. The 4 cylinder made 157 horsepower and the V6 developed 227 horsepower. Both engines are smooth and neither feels underpowered. The V6 goes from to 60 in 7.9 seconds, while the convertible needs 8.4 seconds. Toyota offered a 4 speed automatic and  5 speed manual on both cars and the 5 speed helped with the response. The car was front wheel drive for all models which meant that power was sent through the front wheels.

The 4 cylinder engine is a solid design and it has been used in other models. There are V6 engines which have been turbocharged for increased performance. The Celica and Solara both used these turbocharged engines. The engine is easy to turbocharge and a used Solara engine can be bought, the gaskets can be changed, turbochargers can be added and the performance of the car can increase greatly. Toyota has also won competitions with the turbocharged V6 engines. They provide great increases in torque and have the reliability you have come to expect from Toyota. The 4 cylinder engine has also won awards for mileage and fuel emmissions. It is among the best mid-size 4 cylinder engines in the market.

The Solara is one of those cars which should have not died. It is a rare model and had competition. There was an Accord coupé and the Accord is the Camry’s chief rival. The car was a sales hit too because people know of the Camry’s reputation for quality, durability and safety. The Solara added sportyness to the Camry and in the convertible form, the Solara made the Camry name even more appealing. Persons who love the Camry love the Solara because it is right in all situations and looks good doing everything.
