I turned the unit on when i was in the car for the first time and it took 5 seconds for the unit to find where we were !

This is my 3rd Tom Tom and i always buy them refurbished beacuse they look and work new (Comes with a 6 month warranty) ! I got the unit out of its box and immediately hooked it up to my computer. After a few seconds the unit started and connection was made ( if you never had a tom tom unit, it will download the software for you) i immediately clicked on “latest map guarantee” and it told me that there was a new map available and it was free for me to download ! It took me afew hours to do the download and get the new map and now i have a brand new map in my refurb unit
The screen is very big so it is very easy to enter address and do the settings. The lane assist feature is great now i know where to stay on the highway and never miss a turn. I used it under the train tracks( Bronx NY) and just like my older tom tom never lost any signal and kept up with my speed and turns. IQ routes are great it knows where there will be traffic (gets this info from mapshare not live traffic but uses historical data) and suggests other routes for you to take. Map share is great so even if your map gets old you still get updates from other drivers so it is like getting free maps everytime you hook the unit up to your computer.

I had been skeptical in ordering a new gps. After having difficulty with the tomtom one i had bought a few years ago. tomtom xl 340s, exceeded my expectations further than i could imagine. with updated maps and virtually no blackouts, i would definitely recommend this product to anyone interested in a gps.

My husband and I have wanted a GPS for a long time. I chose the Tom Tom due to the pricing for the value and because all of the reviews were so good. Several reviews even compared the Tom Tom favorably to the Garmin, in which I understand is a great brand as well. It is easy to set up and use.
It had a lot more options that I was not aware of. It is amazing what it can. I did not expect the walking directions and the time tables, short cut or alternative routes due to construction, or that it could locate any service, retailer & restaurant that is closest to your current location, and you dont even to to tell it where you. Tom Tom knows. Afterall, he got ya there!
I also like that you are able to turn the voice directions up or down/on or off. It really helps when you need reading glasses to see the screen but can’t drive while wearing them!! :O)

The good:
- Faster lock onto the satellites than Garmin
- Better routing than Garmin
- Can exclude sections of a route (like backed-up freeways, etc) – missing with Garmin.
The bad:
- Cannot search restaurants by cuisine (needed to find fast food near me, had to run separate searches for the names of all chains I could think of).
- POI does not show address in info
- Does not say destination on left or right
- Very slow route calculation

So far I’ve found the XL 340s easy to use and the directions are accurate.
The only things I wish I would have known about the refurbished unit:
1. According to the materials in the box, you cannot return the GPS to Amazon, but rather you have to call the service number if you have issues.
2. Mine came with 6 month old maps (not a big deal to me) and it would cost $77 to get updated ones (it requires you to sign up for 12 months of map upgrades to get the new ones).
Other than that, mine is cosmetically perfect and seems to work great. It’s definitely worth the $99.
