Superior Engineering and Design
Thule snow chains are hand-made in Italy and are constructed of durable, hardened manganese nickel alloy steel. They feature dual-sided D-shaped links that provide exceptional traction and extend the life of the product. These snow chains utilize a patented self-centering and auto-tensioning system which adjusts itself for a perfect fit. Once the chains are wrapped around the tire, the installation process is completed when the vehicle is set in motion. As the wheels turn, the self-centering and auto-tensioning system activates and the chain tightens around the tire. This eliminates the need to exit your vehicle and brave the elements to re-adjust snow chains. For easier installation in the dark or during the day, all attachment points on the chains are color coded. Additionally, each set of Thule tire chains comes with a hard case, installation mat, pair of gloves, and spare links.

Simply lifting the tension control hook out of the chain link frees the chain from your wheel, allowing you to remove it quickly and easily. Additionally, CB-12 chains are also compatible with all Anti-Lock Brake and Traction Control systems. Perfect for fleet vehicles or the family car, Thule CB-12 snow chains are the premier economic choice in high-performance snow and ice traction.

How to Choose a Snow Chain that Fits Perfectly
To choose the right snow chain you must follow a few simple criteria. First, check your vehicle’s maintenance or owner’s manual to verify it contains no warnings advising against the fitting of snow chains on your particular vehicle. Once verified, take careful note of the three measurements on the side of the tire. The first number indicates the width, the second gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width) and the third denotes the diameter of the wheel expressed in inches. Then click on the Thule Snow Chain Fitment Guide to choose the most suitable model and size for your vehicle.

I’ve owned and used all kinds of tire chains over the last 40 years. Diamond pattern chains are much better than any other style – both for driving traction and ease of installation/removal. I also have a set of Les Schwab diamond chains, they are also good. I bought the Thule because they are made in Italy instead of China. They come in a nice carrying case. I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 because I’ll save the 5 stars for the premium version of this chain. But my hope is to never use them so I won’t pay for the premium ones.

I put these on my minivan (2003 Honda Odyssey) and drove on mixed surfaces (snow-covered, icy, slushy & pavement) in Yosemite National Park. I’ve tried several types of snow chains prior to these — straight cables, Z-cables, GoClaws — I found this pair to the most durable. The other types/brands tended to give out when driven on pavement, or they rusted out after a couple of uses.

These chains were also the easiest to install, thanks to the stiffened inner ring that you just push behind the wheel — you don’t need to hug the wet, muddy tire to reach around to look for the other end of the chain because all the linkages are designed to connect on the outer side of the wheel, and you can install the chains without moving the vehicle. The uninstallation instructions say you need to stop and align the wheel perfectly, but this doesn’t always work because I’d usually have a portion of the chain pinched under the wheel. I found it easier to just unbuckle the linkages and drive over the chains to get them off — very quick. Key linkages are painted in bright colors, so they’re easy to find. There is also a tensioning mechanism to keep the chains from flopping around too much. The unconventional locking/tightening mechanism is easy enough, but I’d definitely recommend that you try it at home before you head for the hills.

I purchased size 102 according to the fitment guide (225/60-16) — while the chains fit around the tread nicely, I had hard time pulling on the tension arm of the chain to hook it to the designated spot on the chain (you’ll have to see the instructions to see what I mean). I just ended up hooking the tension arm elsewhere on the chain, and compensated with a bungee cord.

In my opinion, these drive slightly more smoothly than the Z-cable chains.

I’m very happy with these chains. They store nicely in a compact case also. Good stuff.

The only reason I hesitated to give these chains a perfect rating is that I haven’t actually used them yet. I have used similar chains, and the diamond pattern grips more evenly, rides more smoothly and is easier on the vehicle than straight cross links. This brand interested me because of the fastening system which should take up some of the slack, and because it is made in Italy. If a person follows the directions, installation can be accomplished quite quickly and easily without reaching behind the tire to fasten anything. I tried them on in good weather to make sure they fit and to avoid spending time figuring them out in the cold and/or dark. The latching mechanisms seem to be good quality and well thought out. There is nothing included to protect wheels from scratches, but so far it doesn’t look like any wheel contact will be made on 215/65R16. The included storage container is compact and convenient. Delivery was prompt although ordered within two weeks of Christmas.

These chains are easy to put on, they have better traction than traditional chains, and they have a convenient case. I am a fan of Thule products, and this one will not disappoint!
