The Veyron is Again the World’s Fastest Production Car, With a Top Speed of 268 Mph
If there’s one car that is emblematic for the last few years, it’s the stunning Bugatti Veyron. The brainchild of former Volkswagen CEO Ferdinand Piech and quite possibly the most ostentatious model ever made by the Volkswagen Group, the Veyron is emblematic to the term ‘hypercar’.Thanks to its 1,001 metric HP (987 actual HP), squeezed from the massive 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged W16 engine, the Veyron, at its launch in 2005, became the world’s fastest production car. The car reached a dizzying 253.81 mph (408.47 km/h).Now, five years after the launch of the original Veyron, Bugatti and Volkswagen decided to push the envelope even more, and have released the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport edition. While such an ultimate model was rumored for quite some time, nobody actually thought Bugatti would be able to push its stunning engine even further. Turns out they were wrong. The Super Sport is able to crank out 1,200 metric HP (1,183 HP), thanks to an optimized engine, together with a torque rating of 1,106 lb-ft (1,500 Nm). All four turbochargers were enlarged, the intercoolers are now even bigger, while the chassis has been overhauled, in order to support an even greater speed. How great of a speed? Well, Bugati took the Veyron Super Sport to Volkswagen’s private test track, at Ehra-Lessien, where professional test driver Pierre Henri Raphanel took it to a record-breaking 267.81 mph (431.07 km/h).This figure, once again, makes the Veyron the fastest production car in the world, yanking the title from the hands of the SSC Ultimate Aero supercar, which reached ‘just’ 256 mph.”We took it that we would reach an average value of 425 km/h [264 mph],” explains Bugatti’s chief engineer Dr. Wolfgang Schreiber, “but the conditions today were perfect and allowed even more.”Besides the increased power rating, the Super Sport brings a lot of other changes to the regular Veyron. First off, we have a revised suspension system, up to professional racing specifications, which helps take the strain off the permanent all-wheel drive system.
