The Toyota Prius X Parlee Concept Bike

Toyota reached out to Parlee Cycles and Deeplocal to build an aero-road bike imbued with the same forward-thinking that went into the design of the Prius. Benefitting from a monocoque carbon-fiber frame, built-in smartphone dock, countless wind-tunnel-tested aerodynamic tweaks and its unprecedented mind-powered shifter, the PXP concept bike has emerged as a purpose-built machine that blends the simple with the complex to become a better and more efficient version of itself. Nice to see advance technology being transferred to a new application. I am glad to see Toyota is willing to work with others to improve our world.

I’d rather just hop in and ride. Sometimes it seems that people spend more time buying stuff and talking about it than actually doing it. And I’d never go for a ride with such a board on my back.

I am going to offend some bikers If the next innovative thing from them is pedal-less.

What a pretty frame.

whens the downhill version coming out?

pewpewliekliek says in August 2nd 2011 at 10:08 pm

@AllanJLouis because its a step backwards in efficiency

AllanJLouis says in August 2nd 2011 at 10:28 pm

Why not eliminate the chain and use an enclosed drive shaft with planetary gears on the cranks and rear axle? That way you can eliminate cleaning and the wear caused by dirt and not need a chain guard.

@gkaras27 heyy good for you boy!! here in europe we still ride our horses and carts around, such a pity horse-shit and farts are destroying the planet; we should all adapt your lifestyle indeed.

gkaras27 says in August 2nd 2011 at 11:11 pm

@Cybergabi Well here in the US we can all afford cars, so we don’t have to rely bike as our primary mode of transportation.

folklore2 says in August 2nd 2011 at 11:29 pm

@Cybergabi It’s a concept you idiot. Different bikes for different jobs.

Northpiha says in August 2nd 2011 at 11:50 pm

You don’t need to change gears on a single speed!!!

doyouWantsomepanda says in August 2nd 2011 at 11:52 pm

@Cybergabi You sir are retarted. This bike is not a commuter bike.

Cybergabi says in August 3rd 2011 at 12:41 am

One of the problems with US bike engineering is that they make bikes for nice-weather sporters who take the bikes in their car out to the countryside to bike a bit, but leave them in their garage the rest of the time. No way this could fly here in the Netherlands, where you need lights and baggage carriers on your bike, where it rains 4 out of 10 times that you’re on the bike, and where a lot of people have to leave their bikes outside over night. This is an expensive toy for geeks, not a bike.

jmquez says in August 3rd 2011 at 1:24 am

Except, I like changing gears manually!

Free tip: Think couch potato not ACTIVE cyclists: TV remotes are so 1970!

Wow! it is amazing… great development!!!
Congratulations.

@dmbaechle
You could could use all sorts of variables to control shifting, like cadence(user defined) and power output (depends on type of training day and rider fatigue level). But doesn’t it really boil down to rider preference? Maybe something like heart rate variability could determine rider fatigue and adjust power output levels accordingly, but you would need a way to set the overall power threshold that your comfortable with. …just my 2 cents

tekhnofiend says in August 3rd 2011 at 3:11 am

yes, but how accurate is it when biking in the real world with bumps and all. That totally wrecks the EEG, by introducing millivolt-level artifacts which totally mask the microvolt signals you’re analyzing, so it’d be impressive if you guys have a solution for that
