SafetyBook.org Analysis — 22 Million Recalled Products, Two Reissued Recalls Demonstrate Ongoing Safety Concerns So Far in 2011

40,5000 “Troy the Activity” Trucks were recalled during the second quarter of 2011 by Infantino LLC

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) July 07, 2011

According to SafetyBook.org, a consumer product registry and safety monitoring service, more than 11 million products were recalled during the second quarter of 2011, including over 2 million (or 19 percent) directly threatening the safety and well-being of American children. These figures bring the total number of consumer product recalls for the first half of 2011 to 176, including more than 22 million products. About 5 million or 23 percent were deemed a direct threat to children, including two noteworthy reissued recalls due to ongoing deaths or injuries.

Additionally, 117 motor vehicle recalls were issued between April 1st and June 30th, representing more than 2.4 million vehicles. Approximately 6.8 million motor vehicles have been recalled so far during 2011.

Notably, two major recalls have been reissued already during 2011. Delta Enterprise Corp. reissued a 2008 recall of nearly 1 million drop-side cribs due to the death of a 7-month-old girl in Colorado Springs, Colo. Likewise, Maclaren USA, Inc. reissued a prior recall of about 1 million single and double umbrella strollers recalled in November 2009, due to ongoing fingertip amputations and lacerations.

“Few people realize the volume of safety recalls that jeopardize the well-being of our families and children every month,” said Dan Verakis, founder and CEO of SafetyBook.org. “Reissued recalls are especially disturbing because it means people aren’t getting notified, millions of dangerous products remain in homes, and children get harmed as a result. Clearly, a product recall is a defective process.”

SafetyBook provides a product recall monitoring service to consumers who use the company’s simple registration process at http://www.safetybook.org. The company’s analysis of consumer product and vehicle safety recalls includes data compiled from government regulators, including the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the National Highway Transportation Safety Authority (NHTSA).
