Road trip USA. Chrysler Sebring 2003 convertible or Chrysler PT Cruiser convertible?

Question by SMG: Road trip USA. Chrysler Sebring 2003 convertible or Chrysler PT Cruiser convertible?
There are two of us. We have approx. 8,000 miles to cover in about 10 weeks. The price of car rentals (and the fact that we want a convertible) dictates that we’re choosing from these two models.

Please give your opinion on which is better in the following categories, and why:

- Comfort (seat comfort for long distances, driver’s view)

- Space (for passengers, and for sleeping occasionally, and trunk space?)

- Driveability (acceleration, steering, ease of handling)

- Standard features (power steering, cruise control, etc.)

Having driven both of the choices you mention, I can unequivocally recommend the Sebring. The front seats are lower and more laid back. The entire car has more room, both in the back seat and in the trunk (neither has much trunk because of the space occupied by the top when it is down, but the Sebring trumps the PT).

The PT enjoys an advantage in tight parking spaces due to its short wheelbase, but in every other category of driveability it loses (unless you are looking at a GT Turbo, which accelerates more briskly, but torque steers like a banshee in the process). The Sebring has a far more civilized ride as well.

Both have all the amenities standard, although the 03 Sebring may lack a CD player, depending on trim level, while the PT (if newer) may have MP3 capability.

Take the Sebring. Please!

BTW: 8,000 miles in TEN weeks?!? Can I come with? I’ll pack light and sleep on the ground! Please?!? :-)

The Sebring will have more room. While the PT Cruiser normally has loads of cargo room, a lot of it is taken up by the folded top in the convertible version. If there’s only two of you, that may be OK.

Both come standard with the same 2.4L engine, however the Sebring is available with a V6, and the PT is available with a turbo. The PT has a more upright driving position, like a small SUV. Some people feel that gives them better visibility. I think comfort and driveablilty may be a toss-up. I’ve had a PT for 7 years (2002 Touring model) and I love it!

If you can’t check both cars out side-by-side at the rental agents lot, I’d try visiting a local Chrysler dealer and checking them both out beforehand. No one else can really tell you what you are going to like on a trip like that, in a convertible. Sound like fun!
