Q&A: Which one is more reliable (and fun!) Peugeot or Renault?

Question by nikki o: Which one is more reliable (and fun!) Peugeot or Renault?
I have a chance to either buy a 1989 Peugeot V6 STX (automatic) with 120k on the motot or a 1987 Renault Alliance GTA 2.0L (5-speed) with 56k on the motor, which one???? Agggg I can’t decide…
In response, I can work on it myself and have a few reliable contacts to get parts for me if need be. I am honestly worried about the Peugeot being a hassle due to the auto transmission and being rear wheel drive during winters around here (CT). From what I have heard, both have pro’s and cons, and I would love to hear what people say about either! Thank you for the responses so far! Keep ‘em coming!

To be honest, French cars are not the best. Keep this in mind too, Both Renault and Peugeot pulled out of the North American market. Where are you going to get it serviced, provided that you live in North America?

Get the Pug. The Renault Alliance was made in the USA at the old Studebaker factory.

As far as French cars in the USA…I had a Citroen DS21 Pallas that had 409,000 miles on it when I got it, fine car that was.

Someone gave me a Peugeot 505TD which was a blast to drive. being diesel it haled butt and gave me 40mpg!

I sold Peugeot when the STX was available here in the states. It was the worst headache I’ve ever had. That car had so many problems with it most people who bought one wanted to sue us since their cars were in the shop more than they were on the road. But as I told them, we don’t build them. We just sell them. The dealership owner finally gave up the franchise. It wasn’t worth all the complaints and threats.

The 505 was supposed to be a huge improvement on the 504 it replaced. No way. The 504 was a far better car than the 505 which had constant electrical problems, overheating problems, interior pieces falling off, etc. We were very happy when the owner gave up the franchise.

As for Renaults, they also have a bad reliability record. And as with Peugeot, repair parts are extremely expensive. If you have to have one of them, I say go for the Renault. Yes, they have a lot of problems. But the Peugeot makes them look like Hondas.
