Q&A: Should i trade in 2004 Jaguar XJ for Phaeton?
Question by Pentagram: Should i trade in 2004 Jaguar XJ for Phaeton?
I bought a 2004 Jaguar XJ (first year of this version) pre owned in early 2007 at the depreciated value , it has given me nothing but issues, especially with its taillights, which are supposed to last for a long time.
I like large sedans. So, Iwas thinking about trading it in for the large Volkswagen Phaeton, you can get very good deals on them since they didn’t sell well.
Maybe it was my fault for buying a model from the first year it came out, but it is a nice car in a good price range and so is the Pheaton.
So if anyone has experience or know enough about the Phaeton, can you give me some advice as to what I can do. Some people have suggested just trading it in for a new Altima, but i don’t like those. An they cost pretty much the same with the depreciated value.

do they even MAKE the Phaeton anymore?
If you’re looking for a good full size sedan with lots of guts, comfortable, nice looking, good mileage, etc consider a 1 or 2 year old Avalon. They’re basically a Lexus ES350 without all the glitz. You can find them for around $ 24K used with about 20,ooo miles or less. Whatever you do, you should dump that Jag. Riding the bus is more dependable

I did not read the whole thing, but what I did read you bought a FORD! I do not feel bad for you at all, and now you want to buy a VW? They suck almost as much. Just do yourself a favor and buy a Honda, Japanese car(Nissan), or even better a BMW(any year no matter the condition will be better then the cars you buy no matter how new).
The Phaeton is not known as a reliable car, and in fact, many of the ones like you are describing are manufacturer buybacks, meaning that they tried to do warranty repairs on the car, couldn’t fix the problem, and had to buy the car back from the customer under lemon laws.
The Phaeton is also quite complicated, and VW dealers have to be certified to work on them – and many of them aren’t. So check carefully before you commit to one. A Carfax should tell you if it’s a buyback, and your local VW dealers can tell you if they’re able to work on the car. If they can’t work on it, the platform is the same as the Audi A8 and Bentley Contintental/Flying Spur, so those dealers MAY be able to help you fix problems, but they don’t have to perform repairs under a VW warranty, so you’d have to pay for them yourself.
I love the Phaeton. I’d love to own one. And, like you, I could buy a depreciated one. But after reading edmunds.com forums and carpoint.com reviews of the car, I couldn’t feel comfortable that the car I’d buy would be reliable.
If you want a large car that’s luxurious and reliable, I know of one that’s cheap, comfortable, and tough as nails. But they’re not cool: A Lincoln Town Car.
I wish I could tell you to go for that Phaeton. But I don’t think you’ll be happy.
yea but if you have any problem with the volkswagen taillights its going to be worse because it is much more complicated to work in those types of cars
