Q&A: How can we make health care insurance work like car insurance?

Question by Average College Student: How can we make health care insurance work like car insurance?
Everyone is familiar with how car insurance works. Its available to all. Its pretty cheap. They can’t drop you from coverage even if you are a drunk driver. Once you have a accident they dont raise you rates too much.

Why can’t health care be more like Geico (insurance) and your local car repair man (doctor) and the DMV (government help)?

Best answer:

Answer by Typical Oregon Person
Cars don’t have babies for starters.

it wont be as profitable, Healthcare in America is a business not a service. If I owned a hospital or an insurance company why would I want to charge people less when I could charge them more.

Brain surgery. So easy even a caveman can do it.

Well, I don’t think anyone would appreciate impromptu insurance and license checks

Blame Obama says in January 28th 2011 at 3:43 pm

Start with being able to have insurance across state lines, which will bring competetion and bring down cost…just keep the government OUT, they are inept and destroy everything

Invisible says in January 28th 2011 at 3:58 pm

They cancel you after you use it?

They cant cancel you even if you are a drunk driver??? LOL Good one!

snowball45830 says in January 28th 2011 at 4:12 pm

Trust me your auto insurance company can drop you like a hot potatoe.

Master Obi Con says in January 28th 2011 at 5:05 pm

Allow us to shop around for insurance across state lines, which would create competition.

Oh wait…Republicans have already suggested that, and Obama said no.

Aegis of Freedom says in January 28th 2011 at 5:42 pm

Because the federal government says it can’t.
If you want a free market, then you must tell the government to deregulate the industry.

guyinmaadi says in January 28th 2011 at 6:33 pm

That’s just it….it can work. Nationalized health care could work. The problem is in Washington. How do we precent lobbyists from influencing Dems and GOP members so they can think for themselves and just vote.

Nationalized heath care can save this country millions in the long term and benefit families who otherwise cannot be covered or afford health care for their kids.

Jerry says in January 28th 2011 at 7:33 pm

It could but the Fed’s and State governments have ruined health care with hundreds of mandates that drive up costs with each an every one .Never hear about reforming mandates that would really bring down costs .Our leaders are such fools even a cave man could do better

Are you serious. When you have an accident they don’t raise you much. LOL I guess you don’t even have a car, and that’s the beauty, you don’t have to buy a car, so you don’t have to get insurance. you think the current administration is pushing this so hard because they care so much about people? Reality is itm puts more government in our lives and that’s what they want.

Walter XI JPA says in January 28th 2011 at 8:21 pm

Bad news….

1.) They CAN drop you if your arrested for a DUI.

2.) Have you ever HAD an accident ??? They can and do raise your rates and it’s not just ” a little .”

The DMV is usually full of a bunch of lackadaisical fools waiting until retirement for their unbelievably generous pension plan ( and good benefits ) and finding a good mechanic or repair man is harder than finding a good doctor.

Your lack of education is becoming profoundly painful.

Marty says in January 28th 2011 at 8:47 pm

1) They can drop you
2) For every incident you pay extra premiums.
3) Not available to everyone because right to drive is taken away.
When you wreck your car you can get it fixed anywhere you want , with Govt health you must go to where they say.
People who do not drive are NOT forced to buy buy insurance

eelfins says in January 28th 2011 at 9:15 pm

It does work like car insurance. Both are privately owned but publicly regulated, and you can choose not to buy them. Health insurance will be quite different, however, if it’s controlled by government and forced upon the public. And who will regulate it? The same people that have their fingers in the money jar. If government needs more money, they won’t bother to raise taxes anymore, just raise health insurance rates. No one will even know how much of it is really being spent on their health care. An invisible tax. The problem is you don’t really understand what you’re asking for. But that’s the typical problem with liberals, isn’t it?

Linda K Texan for Life says in January 28th 2011 at 9:31 pm

Your analogy is odd. You are heading in the general direction though! LOL

We don’t need Government Health Care.
What we need is Tort Reform of Insurances Companies. Hospital Charges.

Cap their prices.

Stop them from not covering pre-existing conditions.

Make SURE the policies are affordable for even the poorest American.

Damsell With Stress says in January 28th 2011 at 10:29 pm

A car is a luxury, you do not have to own a car. If you do you and you want to drive it on the roads then you need insurance… Life is not a luxury, the alternative is death so just because you breathe air you think it is right for someone to force you into buy something in which you may not even want?

I would rather keep that one liberty thank you.

Norm Deguere says in January 28th 2011 at 11:10 pm

We cannot. It worries me the type of drivel they teach in college these days.

That might depend on the state, but the insurance company can drop you and raise your rates if you’re at fault. If you’re not at fault, they can raise the rates if they raise them for everyone in your class.

Plus, I think medicine is a little more complicated than car repair. What do they do if they determine that your medical cost will be more than you’re worth. Total you out?

Very disingenuous “question.”

The Patriot says in January 28th 2011 at 11:51 pm

Because the right say that it would be a bad thing for Americans to have access to affordable health insurance that does not drop them on the orders of a death panel.

FACT – Insurance companies in the USA admit to pushing up prices, buying politicians and not paying out claims when they should [1]
FACT – PER PERSON the USA spends more on healthcare than any other nation on the planet [2]
FACT – Obama debated his plans before the election for healthcare [3]
FACT – the chance of a child under five of dying in the USA is greater than industrialised nations with universal health coverage [4]
FACT – Obama was elected by the American people to bring in change [5]
FACT – Obama wants to stop insurance companies from screwing America [6]
FACT – The reforms Obama wants work in the Netherlands and Switzerland [7]

Let me know if my facts are wrong, but please provide proof.
