Q&A: diesel engine maintenance?
Question by harv: diesel engine maintenance?
i am considering buying a diesel truck.
its a 95 chevrolet ck 2500 6.5L turbodiesel with about 180,500 miles on it.
i have never owned a diesel so i am unsure about how maintenance differs. from what i understand, oil changes need to be done more regularly, air and fuel filters changed every year or so, glow plugs every two years? Where I live we get cold winters so a block heater is a must, but are fuel additives nessecary to prevent it from gelling or solidifying?
another question I have is, i would like to add a remote starter to it so that in the winter I dont have to sit in the truck waiting for the glow plugs to warm up before starting, do they make remote starters that are capable of running the glow plugs for say 15 or 20 seconds before starting the truck?
thanks

I would imagine they have remote starters for diesel trucks, just gotta shop around.
As for oil changes, my dad doesn’t do his any more than a normal vehicle, however there is A LOT more oil in the oil pan, like 3.5 gallons of oil, and as long as you don’t go below a quarter tank during your winter, you dont need any fuel additives.
