Q&A: Are 1976-1985 Mercedes-Benz 300 series with diesel engines good first cars?

Question by : Are 1976-1985 Mercedes-Benz 300 series with diesel engines good first cars?
I am 17 and I currently drive a 1999 Mazda that belongs to my parents and I was looking for something classic and highly reliable. I heard that diesel is more economical but more expensive and that diesel engines last forever. I find the 1976-1985 Mercedes Benz 300 series nice, mainly the 300D. Are these good first cars?

It is an excellent first car, although I don’t know if you can find one in good condition

yes its actually a great first car because the engine can go up to about 300k… also they are entirely metal so they are pretty sturdy.

GREAT first (or last, for that matter) cars. They last forever, and, for the novice mechanic, are easy to repair. Parts are still very much available. If you live somewhere on the West Coast, Texas, Georgia, even the Denver area (where I am), good, clean, rust-free reliable examples can be had for less than $ 2500. If in the Northeast or upper Mid-West, most have succumbed to rust by now.

Some suggestions: If going for the 300D, look for ’81 and newer; they’ll have the turbo engine (which offers both increased power AND fuel economy) and the better, more serviceable climate control system. Hold out for a good, low-mileage (under 200,000 miles), well-maintained one or two owner car (yes, they’re still out there!). There’s an old saying that there is no car more expensive than a cheap Mercedes. Figure on doing most, if not all, the repairs yourself. Otherwise, you’ll need deep pockets. These are Mercedes’, after all, and most mechanics get dollar signs in their eyes when they see the three-pointed star. And, like I said, these cars are easy to work on. No computers or advanced electronics.

Finally, before buying anything, join diesel-mercedes in Yahoo Groups. Read the posts, ask questions.

Good luck!

Oh yes! I am 15 and have a 1983 Mercedes Benz 300D Turbo-Diesel and I love it. They are fun to drive, get excellent gas mileage, and mine had a few problems so I was able to pick it up for $ 1200. I have fixed the engine problems (piece of cake) and am working on the interior pieces(missing carpet, broken visor mirrors, etc.) I highly recommend these cars to any first driver, experienced driver, and everybody. Good luck and have fun.

you have hit on one of the world’s longest lasting vehicles, but for a bit more luxury and features let me suggest the 300SD or SDL. With consistent maintenance these vehicles seem to last forever. Parts and assistance are available everywhere. Do be aware there are some serious rust problems for vehicles that have not been maintained properly so check the rocker panels and cross members on the unibody in front.
