Q&A: 98 GMC Safari RWD Acceleration Problem?

Question by Miss Medic: 98 GMC Safari RWD Acceleration Problem?
I just bought a 98 GMC Safari and on my first highway drive I noticed that when i got to almost 100km’s the engine became very sluggish, a deep hum/vibration was heard and it was really hard to get it to go any faster. It has also used an amazing amount of fuel for that one trip. I am going to be towing a small utility trailer with it and need to get this problem sorted out! I had hoped that a V6 would have more power, but it just does not want to go past 100kms/hr.

Sounds like you have either an exhaust restriction such as a catalytic converter or a fuel delivery problem (such as a stopped up fuel filter).
This engine will generally pull pretty well. When running correctly, it should easily exceed the 100km mark with no difficulty.

Any and all motors are computer limited–and straining will not coax extra power out of the motor–even though there is more to give–have a dealer reset all the computer settings and diagnostically run the sensor scan–it might give you a little more power
