My ’79 Caprice (Bought New, Been in the Family Ever Since)
One of GM’s last all-new line of full-size cars, the ’79 Caprice and Impala 2-doors, with their infamous “bent” window glass, were in the last year of a body style that was introduced for the 1977 model year. These “downsized” full-size cars were almost a foot shorter and 700 pounds lighter than the ’76′s they replaced. But, trunk space and interior room stayed the same. In one year, the 350 V8 went from being the smallest engine you could get in a big Chevy to being the largest. As big Chevys had been for years, they were traditional body-on-frame construction, but they were the first cars to be partially designed and engineered using CAD-CAM (Computer aided design-computer aided manufacturing). GM’s other B-body cars, the Pontiac Catalina and Bonneville, Olds 88, and Buick LeSabre, and larger C-bodies, the Buick Electra, Olds 98 and Cadillac DeVille/Fleetwood, also got the downsizing treatment in ’77. Almost a million-and-a-half full-size Chevy sedans, coupes and wagons were sold in those three years, unfortunately not enough to take back the number-one sales spot from the mid-size Olds Cutlass. The universal complaint back then was that GM had made the Chevy full-size cars TOO small. (In ’77, they were only slightly longer than a “mid-size” Chevy Malibu. How times change;-) For the 1980 model year, they were mildly restyled, and that basic body lasted 11 years, until the “pregnant whale” ’91-’96 models, which, along with the Buick Roadmaster, Olds Custom Cruiser and …

FINALLY a Caprice someone hasnt fagged up with 20′s or a wing or a horrible custom paintjob. these cars are a hard thing to come by in good condition. i had an 83 4door 305 and my buddy had a 79 4 door 305 that we swapped for a 350 and built it to 450hp and put a 3 spd jasper tranny in it. put nascar grade brakes on it and left everything else alone. it would hit 140 mph with ease. but only in a straight line of course lol.
@artistmac oh, i was joking. =( sorry
@jthoov To each his own. But why ’94? Tauruses were the same from ’92 to ’95, and not that much different from ’86 (Taurus’s first year) up to ’91.
good year on them….looks awesome
i dont know much about cars but i’d rather have a ford taurus 1994
One of the best sounds in the world at 4:45.
@artistmac hahaha I LOVE IT!!! im quoting this when someone asks me about my baby
thats a nice car man i have a 1986 caprice 2 door ive grown up with this car my neighbor bought it new in 86 he kept it till 2000 then he sold it to my dad he passed away last year then i inherited it now i have this car means so much to me i am going to keep it forever or as long as it lasts its my baby
We used to have a 1985 and an ’89 Caprice Station Wagons. Both where very reliable vehicles. I miss both cars.
@darealgreaseball
@artistmac
thats like my response when people ask me if i want to sell my car.
i saw this in my related section and couldnt help but say HOLY CRAP that is really nice for a 79, my soon to be firebird is an 86 red in nearly perfect condition never restored but it has had… paint oxidation? or something like that, just because of natural wear, but its amazing inside and out. i cant wait to have it and make a video of it
This is only looks clean and stock. Great condition! You don’t see many of these in this condition + all fabric. Are there any (minor) flaws?
i like it looks clean
I Just found one today in a barn its for sale just as clean
“I’m basically keeping it the way it is. No Corvette motor. No 22′s. No thumping stereo.”
GOOD for you, my friend. I’m happy that the person who inherited this car has taste. I’m glad you’re not part of the candy-paint-coloring chrome-rim-installing lowrider-hopping crowd that wrecks these classic American dreams.
Very nice car. Take good care of it. I had a ´78 Caprice once. It´s still in good condition.
@artistmac aww naaw man i feel you but that is my favorite chevy of that model 4 door and 2 door
@darealgreaseball You’ll have to pry it from my cold, dead hands. And even after I’m gone, I’ll haunt the new owner so bad Stephen King will have to write a sequel to “Christine”
is this bitch for sale or what man
My first car was a 78 Caprice Classic Coupe. Powder blue. I miss that car.
@classifiedinfo The undercoating they used back then developed cracks that would trap and hold salt and moisture in northern climes. It was Rust City after that.
As for horsepower, what can I say? The full-size Chevy 350 that year made 170hp. The top Corvette 350 made 225 hp. The late 70′s-early 80′s were a bad time for V8 muscle
The buildings are still there; City Chevrolet is long gone, having moved in with Rogers Auto Group (formerly Rogers Pontiac) several blocks south. When they were still in business, Chevy used City’s giant animated neon sign in a TV commercial. And for years until Caprice production ended, that dealer had a no-bid contract to supply the Chicago Police Department’s Chevy cop cars.
@artistmac what a beuaty is that multi story warehouse still there with those caprices and impalas or was that a long time ago?
man i wished i was at them multi story warehouses where those caprices and impalas were parked at i would been a kid in a candy store trying to pick one out
