Mazda Once Again Gets Into the Timepiece Again

Partnerships or collaborations with manufacturers of watches are normally the scope of foreign car manufacturers. Mazda has collaborated with Sinn Spezialuhren, a German watch maker, in order to build a limited edition watch chronograph (with a retail price of €1,490 or $2,000) that is listed to go on sale in the middle part of August in European Mazda dealers.

Apparently, this had been the third time that Mazda has joined its forces with Sinn. They have released two other time measuring instruments, depicting influence from the MX-5 and RX-8. The watches were the MX-5 NC model and the Sinn 303 RX-8. While the first projects were customised versions of original Sinn models, the new watch chronograph was completely designed by and for Mazda.

The Japanese car maker said that the chronograph’s design was based from the wide array of Mazda models. An example is the rounded square theme of the watch that appears as a design concept in the air intakes, tail lights and door handles of the Mazda MX-5. The chronograph’s band with Mazda’s butterfly buckle is another reference to Mazda vehicle design. Made up of silicon rubber, the band possesses the same tire profile as the Mazda Hakaze – the latest Nagare design study that was created by Mazda’s European design team and shown at the Geneva Motor Show this year.

The watch was designed by Hasip Girgin, the Assistant Chief Designer at Mazda’s European Research and Development Center. He views the creation as a challenge because according to him, he wanted to give the chronograph a peculiar design with instant appeal. He added that for over a year, he worked to find a watch design that would express the same kind of fleshliness found in every Mazda car.

As to the technicalities, the watch has Valjoux 7750 (chronograph of chronometer quality), mechanical lever escapement with self-winding mechanical movement, precision regulator, 25 ruby jewels, 28800 semi-oscillations/hour, Incabloc shock protection system, antimagnetic to DIN 8309, shock protection system to DIN 8308, quick change of date, power reserve of more than 46 hours, and chronograph (stopwatch function/measurement capacity: 12 hours).

The watch displays luminous hour and minute hands, luminous indices at 3 and 9 o’clock on the dial, date display in a window, and centrally positioned second stop hands that display seconds, minutes and 12-hours.

Its casing include satinised stainless steel DIN material grade 1.4435, screw-on casing back engraved with limited edition number, crown that can be screwed, sapphire crystal glass with dual-sided anti-reflection coating, water-resistant to DIN 8310, pressure-resistant that is capable of reaching 10 bar = diving depth of approx. 100 m, and a lug width of 22 mm.

Its strap is silicon rubber with the profile of the Mazda Hakaze concept car tire and a high-quality butterfly clasp with elaborate engraving.

Aside from making quality Mazda vent visor, Mazda once again proved its commitment to manufacturing quality products with its collaboration with Sinn Spezialuhren, for having such an excellent project for the third time.
