Is it illegal to put fliers on people’s cars at sporting events to advertise your website?

Question by stlfan_33: Is it illegal to put fliers on people’s cars at sporting events to advertise your website?
I want to advertise the Cardinals site I work for, and I was wondering if it was illegal to put a flier on ppl’s cars (under the windshield wipers) that say something like:
VISIT “www.asdfnosadf.com” for all your Cardinals news!
i cant put the real address because they’ll call this advertising on yahoo answers lol!
anyway, is that legal?
im talking about in like busch stadium parking lot lol
Everybody that’s getting all mad and stuff lol—I didnt plan on doing this. someone i know wants to help me advertise and he suggested i do this. (my football coach at school lol) lol…i know its annoying…i just wanted to tell him it was illegal. i thought it was lol

If it is private property, they are not suppose to without permission

Only if you get caught.

no, it’s called solicitation. if the property has a sign on the door that says “no soliciting” you cannot advertise anything on their grounds.
I once saw a store kick out a child selling candy for charity because he did not ask permission.

I don’t know if it is illegal, but I do know I DON’T like it. I think it is disrespectful to touch someone elses car like that and I definatly would not use any product, service, etc. that advertises that way.

It IS illegal and it can be charged as “creating a public nuisance”.

I recommend that you try search engine marketing(SEM). Like on Yahoo and Google. That’s the best way to get traffic to a site and it’s completely measurable so you’ll know exactly how much you are paying for traffic.

It’s much more efficient than distributing flyers and wondering if that actually did anything. You only pay for customers that click on your link and if you make your copy very specific about what kind of site you are, then visitors won’t click on it unless they want to come visit you.

Here’s a quick example…

If you spend 5 hrs putting fliers out, that’s 300 minutes. If you did 10 fliers a minute, that would only be at most 3000 fliers right? Now, if you get a conversion rate of 1%, that’s basically only 30 referrals that you will get. Even if you get 10% which I think is totally high, that’s only going to be 300 referrals to your site for 5 hours of work.

With SEM, you can pay as low as $ 0.05 for a referral… the same 300 referrals would only cost $ 15. This assumes people search on the phrase or words you want to bid on… but when they do, they will definitely be the exact kind of customer you want. It’s much better to pay $ 15 than kill yourself passing out flyers for 5 hours.
