How many race fans on here have ever actually driven a race car?

Question by Jay: How many race fans on here have ever actually driven a race car?
At least on a race track as fast as they’ll let you go. Driving schools count. Moving around the garage area or pits doesn’t. If yes, what kind of car and where?
Very wide range of experience. Cool. Yeah, racing in the rain will teach you soo much, and it’s fun if you’re good at it. I want to drive a dirt late model soo bad, maybe someday.

Back in the 60′s in a sportsman modified (like a super modified, but only one carburetor, no fuel injection) and in a sprint car in the 70′s.

I have been racing for nineteen years. I mainly race on dirt tracks in Northern Illinois. I’ve raced everything from Super Late Models, Limited Late Models to Camaro Hobby Stocks. My current car is a 1976 Cutlass.
I also attended The Buck Baker Racing School at Rockingham. That was the fastest I’ve ever driven a race car, what a rush!

I ran off road for about 5 years. I actually think it is more fun than oval racing, which is one of my favorites though. I love flying through the air, when it’s being done on purpose!! My first car was a mid-to-late ’80′s 2 seat Chenowth buggy. My last car was a 2001 Arrow Dynamics single seat Class 11 buggy. The one in my avatar is my first car.

I also have ironed the track in my dad’s late model, twice.

BTW, you don’t “goose” the throttle in one of those things (800+ hp UMP Late Models) unless you are ready for it, and make sure you have your belts on when you do!!

SCCA national license holder – Formula Mazda and IT7 classes… Skip Barber class in 2000 (VIR)and advanced school in 2002 at Roebling Road in Savannah (wings and slicks).. Richard Petty experience in ’98 (LMS).. started racing karts in the early 90′s.. I did my SCCA schools on a double weekend in Savannah in ’99… driving rain and i had no rains! I played pitch and catch in the rain with a first generation RX7 with hoosiers race (dry) tires! ‘turned out to be the best thing i could have done for car control- I have logged over thirty races since being licensed as well as numerous SOLO 1s and Enduro races… I have never DNF’d and never finished worse than 5th…. racing is therapy

I used to race junky, cobbled together, old “stock cars” on an old 1/3mile..(or so) dirt track in New Mexico.

We had to quit night racing because the Gas Station at the end of our track closed down and it was their parking lot lights that lit up turn 4 …..that was a sad day because we all worked all day and only had time to race at night..

I was in the WRC for 6 years from ’80 to ’86. I raced for Porsche and VW. I took part in 14 rallies in those 6 years. I retired early due to some accidents and contract problems that I just didn’t have the nerve to deal with. I prefer the private racing scene over the heavily publicized sanctioning bodies. Sometimes the contract/legal aspect gets in the way and it’s so much easier when the money doesn’t get in the way. Money is ruining this sport, as well as most motorsports.

Later on I went into the street racing business. That was fun for a while but it got boring fast. The drivers lack skills in most cases and if you’ve taken part in it, it’s absolutely nothing like the TV portrays it. And eventually less and less people want to race you for high stakes once they find out you’ve been a professional.

Now I just go to the track and work against the clock or whoever’s there at the time and wants to go for a spin. It’s a great sport/game. Whether it’s rallying or the circuit, it’s fun. I’m not a huge fan of drag racing though. I’ve done it and the rush is fun. It’s just not very challenging and you don’t have as much control over the race as the people who build the car do.

As for the cars I’ve driven. I’ve driven/tested about 100 racing cars all together. I can’t list all of them. My all time favorites however, have to be the Ford GT40 Mk II, the ’73 Porsche 911 Carrera RS, the 1986 Lamborghini Countach 5000QV, and the BMW M3 CLS (I own one of these).

I am 59 years old, and I started in 1/4 midgets when I was 7. From there I went to go carts, and then to sprint cars in the 70′s. Ran the sprint car on both dirt and pavement. In the mid 70′s I was puting a deal together to run Indy, but the money fell through before we ever got going.
