The engine can go 200K easily if taken care of. However, the rest of the car can still fall apart.
While the mileage of a car has some effect, it’s not as much as you might think. If a car is properly maintained (oil changes every 3 months or 3,000 miles, regular tune ups, etc.) a car with over 100,000 miles on it may run better than a car with only 50,000 miles on it. Ask the person you are buying it from if they have any maintenance records for the car (receipts for oil changes, tire rotations, tune ups etc). Always take the car for a test drive and listen for any funny noises. While you are test driving make sure every thing works (heat, A/C, door locks, windows, windshield wipers, and all lights). It would also be a good idea to take it to a mechanic and tell them that you are thinking of buying the car and that you would like to have it checked out. They usually charge less than $50 to inspect the car, and if they do find something wrong they can give you an estimate of what it would cost to fix it… and may save you a headache later on.
Before you need to start replacing parts… that could be 3 miles to over 200,000 miles. Parts can fail at any time or never.
