How do I take good care of a car?
Question by I Love Jus: How do I take good care of a car?
I know absolutely nothing about the insides of the car. I just know how to drive it. So pleae I need to know what I should do, and check to make the life of the car the longest possible.
I just got a new sedan. I want to know what steps to take.
Like inside and out.
What happens if I don’t wash my car? When does it start to damage your car if you don’t wash it? Like all those fluid and oil changes. How do I do that. Where should I take it to?
Should I take it to the dealer? Do they do all that? What about tire rotations. There seems to be so much that needs to be done.
please in english i don’t know metric.

The first thing to remember is that oil (especially engine oil) is the life blood of your car. In my experience if the drive chain is running fine the car is worth repair. Synthetic oil is the ONLY way to go. Some cars will do well with regular oil. But the problem is you don’t know which until it is too late. If you think that synthetic oil is too expensive, then you can run regular oil and have the valve covers removed to check for sludge build up (at 5K and 10K). If it looks clean then you can probably stick with regular oil (but check again at 20K and 30K). On my Honda civic the valve cover removal is 5 minutes. On my Audi the valve cover removal is about 1.5 hours. So good luck.
The second thing is that fluids (engine oil, transmission oil, radiator fluid / anti freeze, brake fluid, etc.) in general need replacing time to time (some at 30K and some at 60K). Engine oil should be replace somewhere between 3K to 7.5K (see your car owners manual).
You should go to auto parts dealer and get a car repair manual for your car. It will answer lots of question about your car. Even if you don’t intend to work on your own car, it can still help you understand you car and keep mechanics from screwing you over. See this link for example
http://www.delmarlearning.com/Browse_Catalog.aspx?Cat1ID=AU&Cat2ID=CHM&Cat3ID=CHM07&Cat4ID=7CCA
These are usually for older (about +5 years) old cars. You can order FACTORY repair manual but that might be too much.

I recently found this book at the book store.
http://www.amazon.com/Family-Handyman-Simple-Care-Repair/dp/0762105135/ref=sr_1_1/104-3574148-6690307?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1184559570&sr=8-1
I found it surprisingly informative. I’ve done all kinds of car repairs myself (brakes, clutch, etc.). But even for people like myself there are plenty of tips I can use. It isn’t HOWTO fix your car book. It is more of what a car owner need to know to keep it in good running order. It answers all your questions above and even more (in plain simple English). At $ 11, it is the best $ 11 insurance you’ll ever spend.
In fact if everybody here read this book once, about 95% of the question here would not even exist.

Trust me on the oil and fluids.

Look in the handbook which you should have received with the car. This will tell you how to check the engine oil, radiator water, tyre pressures, windshield washer fluid. You should check these about once a week. They all need to be topped up from time to time.
Have your car serviced at regular intervals, one of the things they should do is an oil change. Oil is VERY important for an engine.
Take it to mechanic at 1000 km, 5000km and 10000km.
Eventually every 10Km….. for maintennce.
They will advise you.
normal maintenance, talk to people in your area a pick out a good repair shop, dealers tend to be out more for your money than your satisfaction bring it in about every 3000 miles for an oil change and have them look over the car, rotate tires every other oil change. washing it depends on your area, if your by the ocean wash it more, the salt in the air will make it corrode faster,
congrats on your new car! OK here we go;
inside- get 2 cans of 3M brand scotch guard, this goes on all the fabric inside. follow the instructions to the letter. easy and under $ 20. keep a towel under your seat for the spills. NO Armor-All!!!
use furniture polish on the hard interior parts, its not greasy and it will allow your plastics to breath.
engine- get it to the dealer at least once a year for a oil change. if there are any secret recalls, they will be fixed at that time.
use synthetic oil as it is better than petroleum oils.
change oil 3k miles or 3 months. some people believe this is over kill but those cars that I’ve work on that had this regiment were the ones that lasted over 200k miles and had less over all problems. balance a rotate your tires every other oil change. change all your fluids( brake, tranny, power steering and coolant )every 2 years. it may cost a little know but follow the schedule and this car will last a long time. Keep all receipts and write down all services in a record book. this will up the value when u trade in or sell it down the road. hope this helps. happy motoring
Your oil is probably one of the most important things you need to worry about. Almost anything else can be overlooked for a while before you HAVE to tend to it, but not the oil! Check the oil every month or less to be sure it’s full. Change it every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. I would take it to Walmart. Other lube shops charge a fortune for a 10 minute job. Or get a friend to teach you how to change it yourself! Don’t take it to the dealer – they will completely shaft you in one visit!!!
Check the air in the tires when you check your oil. It’s okay to have the tires a LITTLE under-aired in the winter because it provides better road grip and traction. Tour tires should be rotated every 10,000 miles or so just to be safe, but that’s not a crucial element of care care.
Keep your windshield fluid filled – nothing worse than a fresh bug smearing your vision with no way to clean it off!
Wash her every 1 to 3 weeks in the summer. Every week in the winter. The salt can do a number to the under body as well as the paint job.
Brake fluid is important but rarely needs maintained. Same goes for power steering fluid.
If you hear a rattle, hiss, clang, knock, or other funny noise take it to a reputable auto shop – NOT the dealer. Same goes for smells!
Watch the heat gage and it it overheats STOP! You can burn out an engine if you ignore that.
Here’s a web site that may help you:
Owners manual is the best place to look out regading the oil change and other maintenance.
Other than that..you can wash your once in a month.too much washing also leads to rust problems. But clean your car daily with a damp cloth and a dry cloth. After six months see the condition of oxidiation on your car and do waxing if necessary. If yod didnt wash you car then all the road dust, grime will make a coat over the paint and may cause oxidation which when wiped improperly may cause scrathes.
tyre pressures are important.Make it a habbit when you fillup up the gas check the tyre pressures also or once in 15 days whichever comes first.Tyre rotation is good for the tyres since its elongates the trye life.refer the link for that.
info on synthetic oil and filters:

i love questions like this because you just got the car.as a mechanic with 20 yrs experiance the number one thing you can do is CHANGE THE OIL.does not matter what brand of oil you use,but put the origanl brand filter back on it.ie.ford needs motorcraft,gm needs goodwrench,so on and so on.if you live up north where they salt the roads, then a once a month washing should take care of most corrosion problems.oh yeah, change your timing belt every 60,000 miles
