GMC Sierra?

Question by thinkGREEN: GMC Sierra?
Would you recommend a GMC Sierra 2 door for a 16 year old driver, and do you know what the estimated cost of insurance would be? What are advantages/ deisdvantages of this vehicle? I need a truck, and not a car, so don’t say get a car.

It would depend on your location as well as the insurance company as to what it would cost to insure. Now the disadvantages would be not having a back seat to bring any riders other then 2 along with you and it would also use more gas. But the advanteages are that you would have a bed to haul with and would have tow capability depending on what motor it has. What year/drivetrain is it? Don’t take it the wrong way but it might have to much power for you to control at all times.

Better than a red corvette, insurance cheaper anyway

These trucks hold up well, are cheap to fix, and cheap to insure. I am not sure about a 16 yr old driver, but I only pay like $ 30 a month for insurance on my 85 GMC Sierra Classic. Its hard for them to tear up these trucks, and IF (God forbid) they ever wreck it, they will hold up like a TANK. I own 5 of these trucks, years 78-85. All three of my sons will learn how to drive in one of them, but that is just my opinion.

A reg cab truck would be great. You don’t need to be hauling around all your buddies at once. Check with your parents ins. agent re: cost. Disadvantage of having a truck? Everybody always needs your truck. Trucks are the way to go. It’ll keep it’s value way better than a car, also.

I currently own a ’95 GMC Sierra ¾ton 4×4. It gets good crash test ratings due to the heavy duty frame and side impact is good due to it sitting higher than cars. However, the ½ton trucks had a higher theft rate. Getting the diesel version will drastically lower the theft risk. Fuel mileage is not the greatest at 15-18mpg for the V8s and the diesel. Sierras are not expensive to insure, but it would be difficult to give a ball-park estimate since there are so many variables. One way to get an idea is to just ask your insurance provider using the specs of the truck you are likely to get. Durability is very good; I have almost 200k miles on mine with mostly just minor repairs – starter, alternator, brakes, etc. The one thing I wish I could change on my truck is to have the extended cab instead of the small standard cab. Overall, I would say that a Sierra is a good choice.
