This GPS is much less frustrating then my previous 4 year old GPS. The voice commands make navigating very easy and safe. The speaker is of good qaulity can get get very loud. The screen is of good qaulity was well and can get very bight. These setting can be adjust to suite your preference. Bluetooth works well with my iPhone.

Only problem I had is that it reboot once when I gave it a voice command, not sure what that was about. I’ve only seen it happen once… I mainly just use the basics, but it’s nice that this GPS has some additional features such as traffic, etc.

Capable unit, depressingly aweful map color scheme, March 25, 2011

I am rewriting this review after using the 2460LT for while now. While this unit does a lot of things well, it has a fatal flaw in the map coloring scheme comparing to older Garmin units.

The gray background Garmin has decided to use on all its newer GPS units is a significant step backwards in terms of screen readability. It looks uninspiring, dim, and difficult to see, especially if the ambient light is reasonably bright (like what you have on a sunny day inside the car). The coloring scheme on older units such as the 1490, the classic light yellow, is significantly better in comparison and actually looks pretty.

Here’s what I think is happening. Being an LCD display, it needs to compete with ambient light (think iPad, not Kindle where you can read it on the beach). Bright background with black text will produce a brighter and easier to read image than dark background and white text, especially in a brightly lit environment. This is because LCD has a constant backlit, and blocks light to produce color/shade. Bright background allows more of the backlit to go through, increases the overall brightness of the display (allowing the LCD to compete with ambient light using more of its potential).

Older Garmin units use bright yellow background and black text for maps. This combination is great as it allows the LCD to use its full brightness potential to compete with ambient light. Furthermore, the contrast between the background and the text is also significant, making the text very easy to read from a distance.

The newer Garmin unit uses a gray background and black text (with white edging). The white edging is necessary because the black text against a gray background does not produce enough of a contrast, so they have to compensate this by adding artificial white edging around text. (Doesn’t this feel ridiculous already?)

The GPS’s gray background (30-40% of the display’s brightness capabilities) needs to compete with ambient light to produce a display that’s bright enough. Compare this to the light yellow background (80-90% of the display’s brightness capabilities). No wonder the display feels dim and difficult to read at times!!

The problem is more severe in 2D mode as the map displays more data.

It’s unlikely that Garmin will abandon its new color scheme drawn up by some “genus” marketing graphic artist who probably never used a real GPS outside, so I am hoping that Garmin will eventually offer user the alternative of using the classic map color scheme.

In the mean time, I am returning this to the store.
