I am amazed at how much an autoparts store will charge for these filters and worse, how much a service station or dealership will try to charge for this filter.
For the Prius owner, this maintenance task is no more difficult that filling up your gas tank. The filter is front and center when you open up the hood, you merely have to unlatch a few clips to gain access to the filter.
Do yourself a favor and have the new one sitting right there when you get ready to pull out the old one so you can properly orient it for installation –

Don’t pay to have this done —

You can buy this filter and the cabin air filter (even easier to replace as it slides in behind the glove box) together for 1/2 the price you’d pay for one of them at a parts store

Better deal than what the Toyota dealer was going to charge me., October 4, 2009

The Toyota dealership where I take my Prius for servicing asked me $70 to get the engine air filter changed.

What do they think I’m stupid?

This air filter I changed myself. Took all of 10 seconds. Popped the hood, opened the filter box, took out the dirty one, dropped in the new one, closed the filter box, closed the hood. Done and done.

The filter cost me one-fifth of what the Stealership was going to charge me.

Don’t know if this Fram will last as long as the Toyota OEM filter, but for the cost of the Fram I can change it 5 times for each time the Stealership was going to charge me, so I still come out on top regardless.

I’m a little overboard where filters and oil are concerned. Since I replace my own I save shop service costs and get “intimate” with my cars as well as know the conditions of my served components. I changed the Prius engine air and cabin filters at 14,000+ miles. Neither needed it but with the great Amazon prices and the ease of replacements I couldn’t resist. I’ll probably change them early again but it’s a joy caring for my baby. The engine filter appeared identical to the original and I replaced the cabin with a carbon/baking soda model that was definitely a step up while price was less than OEM. Prius owners note that both filters took less than 10 minutes combined and required no tools!
