Could auto racing be an Olympic event?
Question by That Guy: Could auto racing be an Olympic event?
I always wondered if they found the best drivers from around the world and let them compete in the summer olympics, and it was circuit racing like in the ALMS, not NASCAR car circle tracks. Any feed back would be cool.

Unfortunately no.
In the rules it states that sports may not depend primarily on mechanical propulsion.
There used to be A1GP where national teams competed in a series, but that’s no longer running.
The closest thing we have now is the Race of Champions, where the best drivers from all areas of motor sport pair up into national teams and compete. But that is more a commercial event than a true sports tournament.

There should be an international event where stars from each motorsport compete. NASCAR stock car on an oval, Formula one on a road course, Champ Car on a street course, Rally Car on a rally course, Late Models at Eldora. Points for each race, and award Gold, Silver, and Bronze.
But Olympics will never consider auto racing a sport, because the majority of the world doesn’t consider it a sport. Sad really, because race car drivers are more athletic than people give them credit for.
Sadly… No… It cannot be an Olympic event sadly as it is against the rules… they already have the race of champions which is always contested annually but it isn’t the champion from every type racing series… plus the problem is every driver has different skills as to what type of race driving series they are in… hope this helped
I don’t see why it is not. Its the ultimate challenge of man over machine.
I personally would like to see something pure and basic such as a Formula Ford. Racing would consist of heats and finals on one ‘circuit’ and one oval. Also include a small rally stage in an offroad buggy/car hybrid like you see in Race of Champions.
Cars would be heavily scrutineered, only adjustments could be made to basic car set up.
the rules are against this. but i would be cool, seeing some different sports in the olympics.
a problem would be cost, most countries couldn’t afford it, even the UK pays its swimmers and runners dreadfully low wages for the training they do.
another thing, the best drivers often come from countries where cars are not made and vice versa, particularly in F1 (the main exceptions being lewis hamilton and jenson button).
although i’d love to see it and agree with you fully, it couldn’t work
Considering that F1 is the most physically demanding sport in the world you would think it could be an Olympic event but sadly it will never happen.
it wont happen because people who aren”t good enough to race try to re inflate their bursted egos by saying its easy or not a sport. they just wish they could race, but they suck at everything and deep down they know racing is the best. also, everyone would just watch that and none of the other sports because it would be so good.
