Choosing The Perfect Mobility Scooter

Electric mobility scooters are ideal for people dealing with mobility issues such as arthritis, lack of endurance, and minor back problems. These scooters, when tailored to an owner’s needs, can allow people to return to places and activities which may not have been accessible or possible due to mobility issues.

Electric power scooters come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and functions but can be divided into four categories:  

* Travel or compact scooters are intended for indoor and level surface use because of their lightweight, compact frames and their ability to maneuver in tighter spaces such as grocery stores. Travel/compact scooters usually break down into 3 or 4 lightweight pieces which allows for easy transportation and storage in the trunk area of most cars.

* 3 wheel  mobility scooters, built with two wheels in the back and one in the front, work in both outdoor and indoor situations where their tight turning radius makes navigation simple. These scooters are built to heavier standards than the compacts resulting in longer battery life and higher top speeds. The larger tires typically found on three wheel scooters give improved handling and a smoother ride but are still intended for relatively level and even surfaces. Three wheel scooters break down into heavier pieces than a compact but can still fit into a car’s trunk for transportation purposes

* Four wheel mobility scooters – These electric scooters find most of their use outdoors due to a much wider turning radius, the added stability of the four wheel design, and longer battery life. The stability which comes from even weight distribution combined with additional power enables owners to ride them on inclines and rougher terrain. Built for durability and relatively rugged handling, these scooters are typically too heavy for transportation in the trunk of a car, requiring the additional of a scooter lift or small trailer.  

* Heavy duty mobility scooters are made for individuals who require a weight capacity of 300 to 500 pounds. These scooters are rear wheel drive powered  to sustain heavier weights and are usually transported with a lift  or trailer.Typically they have well built suspensions, reinforced frames, anti-tip equipment, additional seat options, and more power than lighter versions.
