can you wear a motorcycle helmet to race a car on a race track?

Question by Dr. James: can you wear a motorcycle helmet to race a car on a race track?
or do you need a different helmet for a car race?

Best answer:

Answer by D B
A helmet is a helmet, they are all tested and rated the same. Most racing organizations will check the helmet to see if it’s up to date within 5 years or so. You can’t wear the old brain bucket you’ve had for 40 years.

Motorcycle helmets are different than car helmets. Motorcycle helmets don’t need to be fireproof, but car helmets do. Depending on what you’re doing and what organization you’re racing with, they might let you wear a motorcycle helmet. Many times noone even checks. I’d get a decent car helmet as soon as you can.

The tracks we race at do not allow motorcycle helmets. They do check and if you do have a motorcycle helmet you are not allowed to race.

Racing or just driving? If you are racing you will need an SA rated helmet. This will differ from the M rated helmet (motorcycle) in that it is fireproof and rated for multiple impacts (the M helmets are tested for one impact). All sanctioning bodies for auto racing require SA rated helmets of the current spec and usually allowing the previous spec as well (SA2005 is the current, with SA2010 going into effect in Oct).

If you are signing up for an Open Track event or an HPDE or something similar, then an M2005 will probably be ok (the group organizing the event will normally specify the exact requirement, but I’ve yet to see any that disallow current M rated helmets).

I drag race at Gateway in St. Louis and they let me use a motorcycle helmet. They do check the date though. I would imagine each track has different policy’s.
