B&M 70268 SuperCooler Automatic Transmission Cooler

  • Rigid stacked-plate design is resistant to damage, and much better at cooling than ordinary ‘fin and tube’ coolers
  • Constructed from black finished lightweight aluminum alloy for maximum corrosion resistance
  • 11″ x 7-1/4″ x 3/4″ model is rated at 13.000 BTU, and pressure tested to 200 PSI
  • Includes installation kit
  • Backed by the manufacturer with a 1 year limited warranty

Product Description
Adding this B&M SuperCooler keeps the ATF and transmission cooler, and keeping a vehicle’s transmission cool is essential for dependability, especially in performance applications. The unit is designed to be very efficient for its size and weight, to cool much better than an ordinary ‘fin and tube’ cooler, and to reduce the risk of lube system failure. Using fluxless, oven brazed construction for vibration resistance, it is built out of lightweight aluminum alloy and features a revolutionary ‘stacked plate’ design with multiple oil flow paths. The unit monitors resistance to flow by allowing a controlled amount of ATF to pass through a self-regulating orifice. Controlled by viscosity, thicker ATF is returned directly to lube through two bypass openings in the stacked plate core, while thinner ATF is directed through the core to cool as operating temperatures increase.

This cooler does what’s expected of one, I guess… not much to say about it.

It comes with 2 sizes of brass NPT fittings to interface with your existing factory cooler, if equipped. Supposedly there is an orifice bypass which serves to prevent overcooling, I guess that’s cool except if you live in Arizona where overcooling doesn’t really happen and instead you’d rather have all the flow you can get.

In case anyone wants a reference of functionality, I have a 2001 S10 4×4 with 4.3L engine & 4L60E transmission. On 110 degree days at 75mph my transmission used to run 240F, now with this cooler it runs about 205-210F under those conditions.

Most people oversize these things. This one is built to be out front of the radiator, where there is little protection. It doesn’t have the flimsy fins, it’s alot more sturdy. Buy some those pre-drilled brackets and mount it at least a few inches in front of the radiator, that lets some cool air mix with the hot air from the cooler before it hits the radiator. I never liked these zip tie mounts since all the hot air from the cooler will heat up the radiator, losing some of your effectiveness and allowing dirt to build up between them that is difficult to remove. It’s easier to mount it in series with the radiator cooler. If you do this, have the hot fluid go to the supercooler first, then into the radiator. Otherwise, buy some extra hose, cleaner, and some plastic nipples so you can seperate the tranny cooler from the radiator. This is the most efficient way of doing the job, but you need to know which hose is the pressure hose and which is the return. A good product, buy it.

The B&M supercooler is worth the extra bucks over a cheaper version. I have another Jeep with a cheaper cooler that works fine but isn’t built nearly as solid as the B&M. This thing looks bullet proof. I like the plate design which allows for mounting using the plastic straps through the radiator or if you want to build a mounting bracket there are holds and supplied bolts to do that. I like the low-pressure drop design as well which allows cold fluid to by-pass the cooler so that the tranny fluid isn’t over cooled in the winter months.

The install took about 2 hours but I’m very careful with what I cut and where I mount it. The 4 feet of transmission hose that comes with the cooler was enough for me but that is mostly due to the way I mounted it. Mounting it in a different location would require more hose so I recommend that before you take too much apart you consider the location. Transmission hose can be purchased for a few cents a foot at an auto parts store.

In conclusion, I am so far very happy with this cooler. Once we begin pulling a trailer this summer in the heat the full truth will be known.

Comes with all the hardware needed to install.

Good quality part.

This is a bit higher degree of difficulty than an oil change or brake job because some fabrication is needed, but a capable home mechanic should have no problems.

It coools the transmission fluid. On my 2001 4Runner. Get 5 extra feet of hose and you’re gravy. Don’t bother with anything else, this is all you need.
