Before Deciding on Damon Braces, Ask an Orthodontist
Article by Jeff Paul
Braces are arguably the most common orthodontic devices in use today. Knowing that, it’s interesting how so many people put up with the elastic or metal ties, or the bands that common braces use to hold archwires in place. These ties need to be tightened constantly, and that creates considerable friction and pressure on teeth. As a result, treatment is slow and very uncomfortable.
There is, however, an alternative. The orthodontic breakthrough known as Damon braces offers several advantages over conventional braces, the most important of which is the elimination of ties and tightening.
Damon braces are part of a specialized group known as self-ligating braces. This means that rather than employing ties, a special sliding mechanism is used to hold the archwires. Proponents say that this system works better and faster than conventional ones due to the gentler, more biologically sensible forces that they exert. While independent studies on this fact remain inconclusive, patients fitted with these braces definitely experience far less pain than those who are wearing conventional ones.
While Damon braces are engineered to be as small as possible, the sliding nature of the system and the metal ‘doors’ that hold the archwire in place make ‘invisible’ or clear variants impossible to execute. Damon users must also keep in mind that, due again to the system’s construction – these braces will most likely extend a bit more toward the lips and cheeks. For most advocates of these braces, though, this slight disadvantage is nothing compared to the discomfort that conventional braces inflict on the user.
The pros and cons of Damon braces are best discussed with an experienced orthodontist. Gordon C. Honig, DMD, is one of the most experienced and highly regarded orthodontists in the Newark, DE area.
