Anybody know anything about the 1988 Volvo 780 Bertone Edition Vehicles? if they were only produced over seas?

I am doing some research for work on this particular auto and cannot find much more than a bertone brochure. from the looks of it, it looks as though its just leather interior, some real wood inserts and a name, any information would be greatly appreciated and if anyone had one for sale please let me know as well. thanks

All Volvos are produced overseas. Volvo is a Swedish company. It is currently owned by Ford, but when the 780 was produced (1986-1990) it was still independent.

The 780 was based on the 700 sedans. What set it apart were a shorter wheelbase, 2 doors instead of 4, a lower roof, and less-angular bodywork.

Mechanically, it had independent rear suspension similar to the 760, while the engines were from either the 740 or 760 depending on model year.

The most notable feature of the Bertone is that it was a two-door sedan version of the 740/760 series. A few stylistic differences were also apparent along with the interior appointments you mentioned. You might hear some people say the interior and the overall styling is dated. What do they expect from a twenty year old car? Some came with the infamous V6 engine, which in my opinion was a train wreck. The better engine choice was the 4-cylinder turbo. They are very nice cars, nicely equipped and Volvo’s reputation comes with them. There is one on e-bay right now, item number 310101723623

the 780 eng. has its own model eng.only 2000 were made & were designed by the same guy who designed ferrai yes Italian,,,they hit the market from 1988 to 1992- one of the 1st cars/w an airbag b4 most american cars and came in a variety of eng. sizes; 4 cyl-turbo–6 cyl and an awesome rare kickass 8 cyl—Bertone is the only signature volvo.oh yeah on craigslist (either the cars/trucks section or auto-parts) there is a 1989 blk 780 for $1800 in the ny area and a country-wide 780 search? there are about 15-20 for sale—–
AND the prices tell you they are rare,,, ranging from $3500 to $8000 WHOA!!! ALSO has a door jam trunk opener latch and the seats are very distinct/w a rectangle loop headrest and always two tone-ie. blue/black—tan/black(or taupe/black)—gray/black—-has a tinted sunroof 4 interior spakers – 2 front 6 1/2 door speaks & 2 6×9′s in rear deck which are bridged together the rear run on the factory amp,,,this car is so rare that every year the value goes UP instead of down like other cars, thats why they cost so much,,,and in the 91-92 models hey rounded the body off ever so slightly just a little—as this was the pretense for the start of the 92 940,,, i love volvo4life, im on my 7th volvo in 6 years= an 88 780- 90 740- 88 760 turbo- 89 740 turbo manual- 92 940- 95 960 & a 96 960 NEXT? AN 850 MANUAL TURBO WAGON,,,LET’s GOOOOOO

The 780 was Volvo’s first attempt at a 2 door coupe since the 242 which was discontinued in 1984. As with the 262c which preceded it, Volvo had Bertone of Italy do the design work. The variation in looks from the standard 740/760 was not as dramatic as was the 262c. But, what it lacked in altered looks, it more than made up with every bell and whistle. Although people ask high prices for 780s, they are dificult to find body parts if you’re in a fender bender. The V6 got a bad name because Americans don’tchange their oil often enough. The 4 cylinder B230FTic was a better motor but it too had issues, most notably smaller piston rods, reduced from 13mm in 84 to 9mm in 85 thru 1990.
Here are some actual production figures; not imaginary ones. Oh…and there was NEVER a V8 rwd Volvo. Some people, like myself, have converted them to V8′s…but never originally built that way.

They are not a particularly good investment car. You’re better off getting a 740 or 760. Parts are plentiful and inexpensive.

Nice stylish well built cars (unless it has the v-6). Very safe and sturdy. If it is in good condition and the price is low enough grab it. There is plenty of info through the various Volvo forums here on the web. I have a 90 740 turbo. I paid $300 for it and have been working on it continuously since I bought it almost exactly a year ago! But mine was in bad shape
