2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Coupe – First Test

Unlike any Range Rover before it, the LR2-based 2012 Evoque 2-Door is so sopping with sport, style, and urban appeal that venturing off-road seems almost inappropriate. It’s not. Read full story here: www.motortrend.com Also find Motor Trend on: twitter.com facebook.com

@4RINGSS5 C’mon man, the hybrid starts at nearly 70,000$. And the hybrid yeilds 24mpg highway. Is it even fit to be called a hybrid (I understand that it may be due to the drive train)? It’s not even a plug in hybrid is it? Doesn’t appear to be from what I can tell on Porsche’s website. I wonder what the curb weight of the hybrid is.

I’m not downing Porsche or the Cayenne, but for me, the Cayenne is just not what I’m looking for. The size and packaging of the Evoque is what I’m after.

ReticentIndignation says in December 14th 2011 at 5:51 am

@superman7890 The Evoque is not meant to compete with the Porsche Cayenne.

I’m a future prospective buyer of the Evoque. I would not have considered the Porsche simply due to it’s size and weight (near 700lbs difference). I like the fact that the Evoque is obviously smaller and drives like a smaller vehicle. The Evoque is more efficient as well as far as MPG. Car and Driver magazine doesn’t even list the Cayenne as a direct competitor. New Cayenne’s compared to old ones don’t concern me.

4RINGSS5 says in December 14th 2011 at 6:01 am

@superman7890 the combined fuel economy of the evoque is 23mpg and that is directly from LR’s website. that’s 4mpg more than a cayenne’s combined fuel rating. 4mpg is substantial. i don’t know how you can say it’s not. and with a $52K evoque you get a pretty well, almost fully equipped car. with a $52K cayenne, you get an automatic transmission. add a couple thousand for gps. another couple hundred for a mf steering wheel. another couple hundred for heated seats. you get the point.

superman7890 says in December 14th 2011 at 6:43 am

@4RINGSS5 cayenne w/ tiptronic is 16/23 which averages to 19; 18/28 averages to 22 straight from USDOE…Which brings me to Land Rover’s “starting price” of 44k for the pure package. Choose either prestige or dynamic and the price balloons to 52k, cayenne territory. At this price point, whats 3mpg?

4RINGSS5 says in December 14th 2011 at 6:53 am

@superman7890 the evoque and cayenne are not price competitors at all. an evoque starts at $43,995. a cayenne starts at $48,300, and add $3,000 for an automatic transmission. and don’t even get me started on porsche optional equipment. a well equipped evoque can be had for $50K or less. the evoque competes with Q5s, X3s and GLKs. the cayenne competes with RR Sports, MLs and X5s.

4RINGSS5 says in December 14th 2011 at 7:32 am

@superman7890 are you kidding? in terms of mpg, cayennes are rated at 15-16/22 (24 for the hybrid). i’m sure these figures factor in stop/start and any fuel-saving measures. the evoque achieves 18/28, which is a pretty substantial difference. the cayenne is nice and all but it is not an efficient car by any standards. the evoque is almost as efficient as a lexus rx hybrid.

superman7890 says in December 14th 2011 at 7:52 am

If you want to talk efficiency, the new cayenne’s are the most efficient to date with 8 sp autos, auto start stop, and ‘lighter’ than the previous model. Also don’t forget to look at combined mpg between these two vehicles, hardly any difference.

superman7890 says in December 14th 2011 at 8:02 am

@ReticentIndignation I was referring to the quality of the drive-terrain specifically and Land Rover’s are notorious for mechanical problems. It isn’t silly to compare this vehicle to a Cayenne as they are price competitors (v6 cayenne starting at 48k) and marketed towards similar people. The “bloated boat” of a cayenne could teach the evoque a thing or two both on and off road.

ReticentIndignation says in December 14th 2011 at 8:37 am

@superman7890 Quality? From what I can tell the Evoque does evoke quality. Doesn’t look cheaply built to me at all. Comparing the Porsche Cayenne is a little silly as well. Much larger, heavier, less efficient vehicle (not to mention the cost).

Unsure what you mean by swag. The Evoque isn’t some lackluster turd you see on just any streetcorner. I for one prefer it’s looks and its size over the Cayenne (although beauty is in the eye of beholder). I’d rather not drive a bloated boat (Cayenne).

lveratadeo says in December 14th 2011 at 9:09 am

@SuperRehank nope starting price for the evoque coupe pure cost $43,995, evoque coupe prestige cost 52,395, and evoque coupe dynamic cost $51,495, i think your mistaken for the range rover sport, now does cost start at $80,000 , where you get your information?

Can someone please tell me what’s the color of this Evoque in the video, Firenze red or some other?

superman7890 says in December 14th 2011 at 12:39 pm

@WellImHereNow I haven’t test driven but collected my opinion from reviews of this car and the ford explorer which shares the same engine might I add. i wouldn’t care if they gave us a nice turbo diesel to play with here in the states. i’m aware ford has been making turbo diesels for some time. can you please point out direct injected dohc turbo gas motor applications, aka turbo technology? I care about “quality” and i’ll take a porsche cayenne.

WellImHereNow says in December 14th 2011 at 1:14 pm

@superman7890 have you test driven it to know the refinement and “swag” of the engine hmmm reviews can only give so much plus expencive 4 cylinders are common place in europe as most people care about quality of the car rather then getting as much as they can and ford a new player in turbos hahahaha not even close fords been doing them for ages here.

superman7890 says in December 14th 2011 at 2:04 pm

@WellImHereNow I’m aware of everyone downsizing, but for 50k I want something with a little more refinement and swag than a Ford 4 turbo. At least in the American market, ford is a new player with turbo technology.
